30 Parks in 30 Days to Help Find a Cure

What a long, strange trip it's been...

A little Grateful Dead to finish out the blog. Nice, eh? It's taken a couple of days, but I've managed to readjust to a normal schedule. I did go watch the Tigers Monday night, and now that the trip is over, the jinx is dead. The boys won, 4-2. If all goes well, we can wrap up the division this week. Go Tigers! This trip started... read more...

The final park...

Well, there it is. The skyline of Detroit, as we drive over the Rouge River Bridge. And it looks great. It’s hard to believe that this odyssey is nearing an end, after 30 days on the road. Enough nostalgia, let the party begin! I was riding in from Pittsburgh with Ribby, Emmett, and Fota. The drive across northern Ohio is predictably boring, but... read more...

Back to Back to Back

Let's see... three rivers, yellow bridges, Iron City Beer. Yep, I must be in Pittsburgh. Can you name the three rivers? The drive from Toronto was long and boring. It took almost an hour and a half just to cross the Peace Bridge into Buffalo, NY. What made it seem longer was that three of my friends from Detroit, Marc Miller (Emmett), Mike Ribits... read more...

A room with a view

Today, the journey took me north to Canada's largest city, Toronto. It's been a number of years since I'd been there, so I was looking forward to the visit. To make things even better, I was staying at a hotel that's built into a ballpark. As I passed through Canadian Customs, the agent was very interested in my trip. Turns out, she was a big Blue ... read more...

South Side shuffle

Well, it took a little doing, but I finally made it to Chicago. After wrapping up my morning show appearance in Tampa, I went to the airport and waited around, only to find that the American Airlines flight I was booked on wasn't going anywhere. Sorry, airplane broken. On the 19th of the 20 flights I had to make on this trip, my luck ran out.... read more...

Lord of the rings

Driving north from Miami, one thing instantly becomes clear... Florida is flat. Really flat. Flat as a board. Crossing Alligator Alley, the only feature, other than swamp grass, is an occasional hump in road where it crosses a canal. Booorrrring. I called JP and made him talk for an hour to help pass the time. Eventually, he had to get some work... read more...

South Beach meets baseball

Get up late... start slow... taper off. That's the Florida way. After a brutal day of snoozing by the pool, it was time to get back to the task at hand. I got a fresh haircut, ran some errands, ate some great sushi (the conch sunomono at Sushi Maki was incredible!) and headed to another new ball yard. Marlins Field is unlike any major league... read more...

Right on target

After indulging in KC barbecue and a Tigers' beat down, it was on to the Twin Cities to see a new park for me, Target Field. I flew in, checked in, checked out (as in a nap), and then hopped the Metro-link train for downtown. It was hot and pretty humid, so I found a nice cool bar near the stadium, Sneaky Pete's, and started talking to folks. I... read more...

Arthur Bryant's is what??

Well, today was interesting. I was blessed by an Imam, I spent 55 minutes in my hometown, and my favorite BBQ joint in Kansas City was closed for health violations. And all this before the game... When I boarded the plane in Baltimore, I was seated next to a very elderly Arab gentleman, who I came to find out was an Imam. He spoke no English,... read more...

Goin' yard

As I was in the air this morning, I found myself thinking about how much I was looking forward to being back at Camden Yards. This is one of my favorite parks and despite a reputation for being somewhat of a tough town (Are they kidding? I'm from Detroit!) I've always found the folks in Baltimore to be very friendly. What can I say? The streak... read more...
